Allison eGen Flex™ Hybrid-Electric Propulsion System Drives Growth of Clean Transportation in the Midwest

Allison Transmission’s next-generation eGen Flex™ hybrid-electric propulsion system has been selected by several Midwestern transit agencies for their bus fleets.

The Metropolitan Evansville Transit System, which provides public transportation services for Evansville, Ind., will integrate eGen Flex-equipped GILLIG buses into its fleet. Additionally, Oshkosh, Wis.-based GO Transit and the Muncie Indiana Transit System have selected eGen Flex-equipped New Flyer buses for their fleets.

“Allison is proud to partner with transit agencies across the Midwest to support their efforts to reduce carbon footprint and reliance on fossil fuels to protect the environment and improve the quality of life for their riders. said David Graziosi, President and CEO, Allison Transmission. “As fleets transition to hybrid-electric and all-electric technology to support sustainability goals, Allison is excited to be a partner of choice because of its ability to deliver innovative technology specifically designed to meet the needs of the fleet. transit industry.”

Adding to this recent growth across the Midwest, Allison announced in June the delivery of the first buses equipped with the eGen Flex hybrid-electric propulsion system to IndyGo, the Indianapolis Public Transportation Corporation.

The company says in-use testing of the eGen Flex in 2022 confirmed that the engine was off for more than 50% of bus operating time. As a result, the eGen Flex-equipped bus ran in all-electric mode for more than half of its day. Allison’s eGen Flex system can operate in electric-only mode for up to 10 consecutive miles or 50 minutes, multiple times per route per day. The system’s geofencing technology eliminates engine emissions and noise when loading and unloading passengers in dense pedestrian areas and in zero-emission zones and bus depots.

The Allison eGen Flex system is the next generation of Allison’s proven H 40 EPTM hybrid electric propulsion system, which has been operating in transit buses since 2003.
