Bell chooses Rolls-Royce engine for V-280

Bell chose Rolls-Royce’s AE 1107F engine to serve as the propulsion system on the V-280 Valor tiltrotor if the program wins the U.S. Army’s Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft (FLRAA) competition.

John Shade, Executive Vice President of Business Development and Future Programs at Rolls-Royce, said
on October 11 at the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) convention that the AE 1107F is a modification of the 7,000 shp AE 1107C turboshaft engine that powers the Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey tilt rotor. The company’s AE family of products are used on a variety of military aircraft such as the Northrop Grumman RQ-4 Global Hawk and MQ-4C Triton, and Boeing MQ-25A Stingray drones, he said.

The V-280 was initially powered by a pair of General Electric (GE) T64-GE-419 free-turbine turboshaft engines during the multi-role joint technology demonstrator phase. Ryan Ehinger, Vice President of Bell and Program Director for FLRAA / V-280, said
on October 12 that the company researched several options among the propulsion systems available for the V-280.

Ehinger said Bell and Rolls-Royce have been working together on a propulsion option for FLRAA for the past three years. Shade said Rolls-Royce had worked on other U.S. military-funded transaction authority contracts backing Bell, on the complete propulsion system.
