MHI to expand MHIAEL plant in Nagasaki to manufacture aircraft engine combustors, Business News
TOKYO, April 22, 2022 – (JCN Newswire) – Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has decided to expand the Nagasaki plant of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Aero Engines, Ltd. (MHIAEL), an aircraft engine component plant located in the Nagasaki Shipyard of MHI and Machine Works. The demand for engine components for short- and medium-range commercial aircraft manufactured at this plant is expected to increase further in the near future. The expansion will further strengthen its in-house production capacity and cost competitiveness and establish a structure that will enable MHIAEL to meet industry needs with speed and precision once growth resumes in the post- Covid. The expansion is expected to be completed in March 2024.
The existing production facility manufactures combustors for the PW1100G-JM engines that power the Airbus A320neo family. Since the start of its operations in November 2020, production has gradually increased and currently all production lines are operating close to the planned capacity. The Covid-19 pandemic has led to a sharp drop in demand in the aviation industry, but business related to short- and medium-range commercial aircraft used on domestic routes has seen a rapid recovery. The flight hours of Airbus A320neo family aircraft have already exceeded their pre-Covid level.
Airbus plans to gradually increase production of the A320neo in response to strong demand for narrow-body aircraft. At the same time, the demand for combustion chamber components for PW1100G-JM engines, as well as after-sales service, is expected to double over the next few years. This round of additional investment to build a second facility adjacent to the existing plant will almost double the size of the plant, to approximately 11,000 m2 from the current level of 5,400 m2. In addition, the new facility will allow MHIAEL to incorporate certain manufacturing processes currently outsourced to overseas vendors to achieve fully integrated manufacturing for combustion chambers, as well as strengthen its manufacturing facilities to support a significant increase in the production.
The Nagasaki MHIAEL plant is a factory specializing in the manufacture of combustion chambers, which is one of the essential components of an aircraft engine, and the first full-fledged aircraft component plant in the region of Kyushu. The plant has production lines capable of handling fully integrated operations, from receiving materials to machining and assembly. To achieve the high degree of precision and quality required for aircraft engine components, MHIAEL has introduced automation and labor-saving technologies such as advanced machine tools and transport and change of automated tools. The company also applies and uses IoT (Internet of Things), AI (Artificial Intelligence) and other technologies cultivated at its main parent plant in Komaki, Aichi Prefecture, to ensure a reliable engine component factory. aircraft with world-class levels of productivity and efficiency. .
MHI Group, in anticipation of a long-term increase in demand for commercial aircraft engines worldwide, is expanding its commercial and production structure of aircraft engines, and this plant expansion plan makes part of this effort. The group is also actively working to strengthen its maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) business for commercial aircraft engines and is making steady progress to expand its MRO business portfolio at MHIAEL’s main site in Komaki.
Going forward, MHI will work closely with MHIAEL to improve the technological capabilities and reliability of aero engine development, manufacturing and after-sales service, as well as to expand production capabilities and contribute to the advancement of the Japanese aircraft industry.
