QPS Moves Forward With Plan to Buy K&L Arena for Transportation Consolidation

QUINCY (WGEM) — Quincy Public Schools is moving forward with plans to consolidate their transportation facilities in one location after the school board voted to approve an emergency contract to buy K&L Arena Wednesday night.

At present, transport operations are split between the Bus Barn at 20th and Hampshire and Flinn Stadium.

The move eliminates the need to commute between Flinn and the bus barn and addresses noise concerns from neighbors of the bus barn.

The $2 million offer is just below the list price for the 55,000 square foot building on the 5-plus acre site.

School board chairman Sayeed Ali said the acquisition was a great resource for QPS.

“We won’t be able to get something at $40 a square foot in this market and then have extra room for all the needs we have. It’s good value for money,” Ali said.

School board member Richard McNay said the sale is expected to close on June 30 and the renovations should be completed within a year.

While those renovations could cost between $800,000 and $1 million, McNay said the school district will still save money.

“We will have to do some conversions to make it a bus barn. It will be cheaper, probably around 50%, to buy and convert this building than to buy and convert Flinn Stadium,” McNay said.

He said the current bus barns would be repurposed for other uses by Quincy Public Schools.
