Wider in Italy has selected a pair of MAN 12V175D-MEV variable speed marine generator engines for its new Moonflower 72 project. The Wider series hybrid propulsion system consists of two 1860 kW variable speed engines and one 1 MWh battery bank.

In combination with permanent magnet alternators providing electrical energy for a direct current network, MAN 175D motors are ideal for guaranteeing the lowest fuel consumption at variable speed. Both engines will be supplied with MAN Energy Solutions’ versatile and efficient SCR exhaust after-treatment system, enabling the vessel to meet IMO Tier III emission standards.

MAN Energy Solutions’ production plant in Denmark will deliver the engines to Wider in April 2023.

Marcello Maggi, who heads W-Fin Sarl, the holding company that owns 100% of the capital of WIDER, said: “Wider’s engineering team is extremely excited about this very innovative new project. Choosing to equip the project with just two diesel generators gave us the opportunity to optimize the space and layout of the engine room without compromising performance and safety. In fact, the aim was to increase the overall efficiency of the complete propulsion system and we believe that with the combination of the larger management system, the batteries and especially the MAN 175D engine, we have struck the right balance. Thus, this configuration benefits from an additional 7% optimization on the already excellent performance of the previous Wider projects”.

Luciano Cardini, Head of Wider Engineering, said: “To further comment on the amazing characteristics of the generators, we will note the twin damper installation which completely cuts out structural vibrations, a very compact SCR system integrated into a very innovative exhaust system. , and an incredible TBO of 30,000 hours!

Florian Keiler, Sales Manager High-Speed for Worldwide Yacht applications, MAN Energy Solutions, said: “This is the latest benchmark for the MAN 175D engine in the superyacht market. This clearly demonstrates that the MAN 175D is perfectly suited to such an innovative application, where its technical and economic credentials put it in good stead, while its compactness, performance and operating cost advantages are all seen as key aspects for our customers.
